Collection: Abruzzo: Tiberio

In 1999, Riccardo Tiberio encountered a small, neglected 1.5-hectare vineyard. This plot was planted with very old Trebbiano Abruzzese vines, a rare native white grape variety. Convinced of its potential, he purchased the land and found Azienda Agricola Tiberio. Nowadays led by siblings Cristiana and Antonio Tiberio, the winery has redefined native grapes like Trebbiano Abruzzese and Pecorino, earning a stellar reputation among wine experts worldwide.

The Unique Terroir
The winer's identity is deeply rooted in its unique geographical location. Nestled in the hills of Cugnoli at around 350-380 meters above sea level, the vineyards sit between two valleys carved by the Gran Sasso and Maiella mountain ranges. This position creates a unique micro-climate:

Cooling Winds: Constant, ventilating winds from the mountains funnel through the vineyards, cooling the vines and reducing humidity, which naturally lowers the risk of disease.

Temperature Difference: The altitude and mountain influence lead to a wide diurnal temperature range. This allows the grapes to ripen fully while retaining vibrant acidity.

Mineral-Rich Soils: The predominantly calcareous (limestone-based) and clay soils, often mixed with sand and rocks, impart a distinctive mineral tension and complexity to the wines.

Cristiana's Philosophy
Cristiana Tiberio from a chemist background is in charge of winemaking. Her principle is to allow the unique "terroir" to speak through the wine. This is achieved through a range of meticulous practices:

In the Vineyard: Focus on sustainability and low yields. They dry-farm their vines, encouraging deep root growth. Natural cover crops are allowed to grow spontaneously between the rows to promote biodiversity and soil health.

In the Cellar: Winemaking is minimalist and non-interventionist. Native, indigenous yeasts are used for spontaneous fermentation. Vinification and ageing are done in stainless steel tanks to preserve the pure fruit character. Only the free-run juice (the highest quality juice that flows without pressing) is used for their white and rosé wines. Their white wines and Cerasuolo rosé do not undergo malolactic fermentation, which helps maintain their bright, crisp acidity.

The Wines
Tiberio's portfolio is a showcase of Abruzzo's indigenous varieties, with each wine achieving cult status in its own right. Ian d'Agata highly praise the winery as "one of the Italy best-buy wine".

Fonte Canale (Trebbiano d'Abruzzo): This is universally considered the estate's flagship wine. Made from a tiny parcel of ungrafted, 90+ year-old Trebbiano Abruzzese vines, it is widely regarded as one of Italy's top white wines, celebrated for its depth, minerality, and remarkable aging potential.

Pecorino: Tiberio's version of this ancient variety has become a benchmark for the grape. It is highly praised for its complex aromatics, rich texture, and refined character, often eclipsing other examples. Ian d'Agata comments Tiberio's Pecorino as "three best Picorino in Italy".

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo: Tiberio produces a range of expressions, from a vibrant and energetic base-level wine to single-vineyard selections like the Archivio and Colle Vota, which are considered two of the finest reds in the region. The Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, a vivid rosé made from Montepulciano grapes, is also acclaimed for its freshness, bright cherry fruit, and savory mineral core.

Critical Acclaim
Tiberio have earned a dedicated following among sommeliers and wine lovers for offering exceptional value wines. Cristiana Tiberio have received widespread critical acclaim, with features in Vinous, The New York Times, and Wine Spectator, making the  estate as a true star of modern Italian winemaking.

Cristiana
