Which wines should I try from Rainoldi?
Founded in 1925 and currently managed by third generation Aldo Rainoldi, Rainoldi is one of the leading producers of the winery.  Their single subzones wines (Inferno, Grumello and Sassella) are essential for our understanding of the region.

Inferno (350 to 550 meters asl)
A subzone named "hell" because of the steepness of the vineyards.  Stone terraces absorb and reflect heat and the wine hereare full-bodied and appreciated for their exuberant tannic power and austerity.

Grumello (350 to 650 meters asl)
Located just next to Inferno is the subzone Grumello and the landmark Grumello castle.  This part of Valtellina is vertically inclined, from 350 meters up to 650 meters in the highest part of the area called Dossi Salati.  All of Rainoldi's vineyards are in Dossi Salati and the wines are particularly fresh and fruity.  

Sassella (300 to 630 meters asl)
The name Sassella refers to the importance of the particularly iron-rich bedrock on which a smaller layer of top soil rests. This is the most important subzone in Valtellina and the area are recognized for their particular elegance and potential for aging. 

Sforzato di Valtellina
A dry red wine made with partially air-dried grapes as in Amarone della Valpolicella.  This technique is traditional to the area and dates back to the early 17th century.
