Collection: Abruzzo: Cataldi Madonna
"Cataldi Madonna is one of the very finest estates in Italy. The wines are varietally expressive, full of personality and beautifully crafted." Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (February 2013)
Cataldi Madonna begins its modernize journey since Luigi Cataldi Madonna takes up his father’s winery in 1968. Vineyards is replanted, cellar is modernized, and native grapes become the focus. In his 31 hectares vineyard, Luigi shows the world the best from Abruzzo: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, and Pecorino. The winery is certified organic since 2016, and is now one of the most renowned wineries in Abruzzo, if not the whole Italy.
The terrior of Ofena: Ofena is in the Mediterranean climate zone, characterized by a glacier landscape. Ofena is situated at the foot of Appenine glacier with an altitude of 300m above sea level. The site enjoys a spectacular view of the mountain landscape and an ideal micro-climate for growing grapes - long time sun exposure, great temperature variations and unique soil composition from the glacier.
Winemaking: Lorenzo Landi is the consultant of the winery. He introduces the hyper-reduction winemaking technique to preserve the very best of the terrior. This French-inspired technique protects the wine from oxidation, makes the wine to attain maximum aroma, clarity and elegance.
Pecorino: Abruzzo is home to the white grape Pecorino. Like many native grapes of Italy, Pecorino has fallen into obscurity in the wild until the 1990s wave of native grape revival. The first bottle of modern Pecorino is bottled in Abruzzo in 1996.
Pecorino is a small and pale white grape that thrives in mountain landscape. It has high sugar content that the local sheep (pecora) love to eat it – here is where the name Pecorino comes from! The wine show great complexity since its young age. As well as freshness, it also show notes of soft fruit, florals, dry herb and minerality.
Cerasuolo: Cerasuolo becomes a DOC in 2010, standing out from other rose from the region for its skin-contact winemaking technique. Unlike other rosato, Cerasulo is deep in colour and medium in body, with aromas of orange peels, dried cherry and spice.
