Weingut Zahel: A Viennese Urban Biodynamic Excellence

Weingut Zahel is a historic family estate that has championed biodynamic viticulture and the revival of Vienna’s winemaking traditions since its founding in 1724. Now in its fourth generation under Richard Zahel and his nephew Alex, the winery combines centuries of heritage with a progressive vision, producing award-winning wines that reflect the unique terroir of Austria’s capital .

Spanning 10 hectares of certified biodynamic (Demeter) and Regenerative Organic Certified® vineyards, Zahel’s holdings include prestigious sites such as Nussberg, Oberlaa, and Mauer. These vineyards, perched on slopes of sandstone, limestone, and flysch soils, yield indigenous varieties like Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and rare gems such as Orangetraube and Rotgipfler, alongside international grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir . The estate’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond farming: solar energy, compost teas, and floral cover crops enrich biodiversity, while ancient stone terraces and manual harvesting preserve the integrity of each parcel .

Zahel’s flagship offering is its Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC, a traditional field blend of at least three co-planted and co-fermented grape varieties. This historic style, revived by the Zahels, showcases vibrant acidity, stone fruit, and floral complexity, epitomizing Vienna’s wine culture. Their meticulous process includes spontaneous fermentations, extended skin contact (18–72 hours), and aging in neutral oak or amphorae, resulting in wines of precision and texture without overt oak influence.

Beyond its acclaimed Gemischter Satz, the estate produces limited-edition cuvées under its “butterfly label,” with annual releases as small as 300 bottles. These experimental wines, ranging from single-vineyard whites to skin-contact expressions, highlight Alex Zahel’s innovative spirit while maintaining a clean, balanced profile that defies the “natty wine” stereotype.
