Giuseppe Gorelli: A Custodian of Sangiovese in the Heart of Montalcino
Nestled in the northeast of Montalcino, Tuscany, Giuseppe Gorelli’s eponymous winery embodies a lifelong dedication to crafting wines that honour the purity and tradition of Sangiovese. A protégé of Giulio Gambelli, the revered “maestro del Sangiovese,” Gorelli honed his craft over 15 years while managing his family’s historic estates, Due Portine-Gorelli and La Potazzine, before establishing his own venture in 2018. This marked a new chapter for Gorelli, whose deep-rooted connection to Montalcino’s terroir is reflected in his meticulous approach to organic viticulture and restrained winemaking.
Gorelli’s journey began in 1987 with his first Brunello di Montalcino under his grandfather’s label, Due Portine-Gorelli. After co-founding Tenuta Le Potazzine with his wife, Gigliola Gianetti - a former winemaker at Biondi Santi - the couple garnered acclaim for classically styled Brunello before amicably parting ways. Today, Gorelli oversees 6 hectares of old vines, split between Montalcino’s northern slopes and a south-facing plot in Sant’Angelo in Colle, where organic practices and a focus on freshness define his wines.
The winery’s inaugural 2018 vintage, sourced from organically converted vineyards, introduced a Rosso di Montalcino celebrated for its accessibility and vibrancy, alongside a structured Brunello di Montalcino that underscores Gorelli’s commitment to aging potential1. His minimalist cellar practices—spontaneous fermentations, precise maceration, and aging in neutral oak—yield wines of “crystalline” minerality and aromatic complexity, balancing Montalcino’s heritage with a modern sensibility.
With limited annual production and a growing international presence, Giuseppe Gorelli’s wines are a testament to Montalcino’s evolving narrative, where tradition and innovation converge in every bottle. For enthusiasts seeking Sangiovese of authenticity and finesse, Gorelli’s creations offer a compelling glimpse into the soul of Tuscany’s most revered appellation.
