Collection: Tuscany: Poggio Scalette
The story of Podere Poggio Scalette is one of vision, passion, and the revival of a legendary terroir in the heart of Chianti Classico.
A Visionary's Dream Realised
The estate was founded in 1991 by Vittorio Fiore, a legendary and pioneering Italian oenologist known as the "Master of Sangiovese," along with his wife Adriana. After years of neglect, the couple acquired a series of abandoned plots and rural buildings on the Ruffoli hill in Greve in Chianti to create their own perfect expression of Tuscan wine. The estate expanded in 1996 with the purchase of an adjacent property, which included functional cellars and more vineyards, bringing its total size to an impressive 40 hectares, with 15 hectares dedicated to vines.
A Philosophy of Terroir and Heritage
The name "Poggio Scalette" itself is a tribute to the landscape, referring to the dry-stone walls that support the terraced vineyards . This unique and prized terroir, composed of limestone, sand, and clay, is the foundation of the estate's exceptional wines. Central to the estate's heritage is the "Il Carbonaione" vineyard, which was the first area to be replanted after the phylloxera epidemic and World War I. These pre-phylloxera vines, over 90 years old, are a rare example of the original Sangiovese di Lamole clone, producing grapes of exceptional intensity and complexity.
Redefining Modern Elegance
Today, the estate's legacy is carried forward by Vittorio's sons: Jurij, an oenologist trained in Burgundy, who serves as winemaker, and Alessandro, who oversees commercial activities. This Burgundian influence is clear in Jurij's style, which focuses on producing wines of remarkable precision, fine-grained tannins, and elegant acidity. The portfolio showcases the estate's versatility, with each wine expressing a distinct personality.
