Riesling "Schonfels" GG (Faß 11), Weingut Peter Lauer 2012

Riesling Fass 11 "Schonfels" Grosses Gewachs  (GG / Grand Cru), Weingut Peter Lauer, Saar, Mosel, 2012

The flagship wine of the estate. From a plot of low yielding, 100 years old Riesling vines on a windy and 70-90% inclination site. Slate soil. The site was abandoned by the family because it is too steep to work with for decades before Florian restored it around 10 years ago. The most linear and mineral of the 3 GGs. Annual production 2,000 bottles. (DECO tasting team)

The Schonfels GG comes from the Schonfels, a vineyard overseeing the Saar and situated next to the Saarburger Fuchs. The parcel is planted with over 80 year-old un-grafted vines. This delicately exotic wine is all about banana, coconut and pineapple yet also smoke and minerals. The feel on the palate is immaculately well balanced and leaves a great feeling of class and finesse in the after-taste. This is best left alone for a year in order for the currently noticeable tannic structure to melt into the wine. (92, Mosel Fine Wines)
