Campania is home to Piedirosso, an ancient grape of the area first recorded in document dated back to Roman times. Around 2000 years ago, the Roman Author Pliny the Elder mentions Piedirosso in his encyclopedic Naturalis Historia. Like all red is called Rosso in Italian, Piedirosso is a red grape, while "pied" means feet. This red grape gets its name from its colour, as it is said to be similar to the feet of the pigeon.
