Riesling "Kupp" GG (Faß 18), Weingut Peter Lauer 2011

Riesling Fass 18 "Kupp" Grosses Gewachs  (GG / Grand Cru), Weingut Peter Lauer, Saar, Mosel 2011

From a South facing plot in the middle section of the Ayler Kupp. Planted in 1956, slate soil. The style is somewhat in between that of Schonfels and Saarfeilser. Annual production 2,000 bottles. (DECO tasting team)

The Fass 18 is a dry wine made from a prime parcel situated mid-slope in the classical part of the Ayler Kupp which was planted in 1956 (hence the name). This offers a superb nose of peach, pear, cassis, smoke and herbs. The wine is powerful and comparatively opulent on the palate, but retains just an incrediable freshness and smotth precision in the finish. This is a superb wine in the making. (91, Mosel Fine Wines)

From vines planted in 1956 you expect substance and this exactly what Fass 18 has to offer. Call it T for trocken if you will, but even at this early stage the Kupp 56 integrates minerality, generous body, juicy fruit, gently bitter peel and rounded acidity with great ease. Drink soon if you must, but I believe that it will be really stunning in 2018. (18/20, Michael Schmidt, JancisRobinson.com)
