Exopto Red, Bodegas Exopto, Rioja DOC, Spain, 2011
Tasting Note: A dark violet colour. Well-ripened black fruits complemented by touches of vanilla, roast coffee, spices and pepper. Cherry and cassis clearly defined on the palate, with spicy touches. A notably long, firm finish. Very modern and appealing too.
Aging: 18 months in new French oak barrels. Aged on lees.
Vineyard Altitude: 1,600 feet (478 meters)
From the winemaker Tom Puyaubert:
I arrived in Spain at the beginning of 2000, leaving my native land of Bordeaux in order to settle in La Rioja and increase sales for a famous French cooperage. In daily contact with the best winemakers in Spain, I became enthralled with La Rioja, its vineyards, culture and whole way of life. In 2003, I decided to set up Bodegas Exopto so that I could strengthen my ties with this region and express its character through a range of distinctive, original white and red wines.
