Riesling "Saarfeilser" GG (Faß 13), Weingut Peter Lauer 2012

Riesling Fass 13 "Saarfeilser" Grosses Gewachs  (GG / Grand Cru), Weingut Peter Lauer, Saar, Mosel, 2012

From a South-South East plot on a mild climate peninsula between the Saar river and Saar channel. From 55 years old vines. Gravel soil. The Lauer family used to make Spaetlese and Auslese from this site, but in 2012, they bottled their first dry wine. This is the biggest out of the 3 GGs, Florian likes to compare its phenolic structure to that of Pinot Noir. Annual production 2,000 bottles. (DECO tasting team)

The Saarfeilser GG is made from a prime south-facing steep slope overseeing the Saar situated in the Schodener Saarfeilser Marienberg and in its direct continuation on Ayler soil (technically Ayler Kupp but completely separate from the main hill). This offers the telltale scents of bergamot, white peach, grapfefruit and a hint of mango, all blended into a great touch of chalky minerals. The wine offers great presence on the palate and a superb spicy and racy feel in the finish. (91, Mosel Fine Wines)
